In today’s technological climate, big data has transformed the way we make decisions, buy things, meet people, conduct business, understand behavior… and most importantly, how we can analyze important social, political, and economic issues.
Tufts Enigma, the University’s first and premier independent data journalism group, is situated right at the crossroads of ‘data science’ and relevant real world issues. In the past, our issues have covered such as LGBTQ in tech, STEM education, and mental health trends in student confessions.
This year, we are doing something special by putting together a workshop series - so that you too can use data journalism on a project you’re passionate about!
If you are interested in working on a piece for the Tufts Independent Data Journal and you’d like to learn some awesome (not to mention employable) data-centric + machine learning skills along the way, come join us Tuesday night at Eaton 202!

Ever wanted to collect statistics or answer some big questions about a large amount of data? Interested in running statistical analyses on data related to an issue you’re passionate about?
This is a workshop open to the general Tufts community about using Python to scrape public data for the purposes of analysis / data mining. Individuals of all programming experience are welcome as this will be in the context of ‘data journalism’, not computer science.

This is our second workshop this year. We will be focusing on how to acquire data from the Internet using sources rather than data scraping or other programming-intensive methods. We will also be teaching you how to use Orange (http://orange.biolab.si/), a user friendly data science suite in Python (don’t worry, this time we don’t expect you to have any background in Python whatsoever!). The purpose of this workshop is to focus on the journalism rather than coding. And afterwards, you will meet and get to know your project groups for this semester!
If you are interested in working on a piece for the Tufts Independent Data Journal and you’d like to learn some awesome (not to mention employable) data-centric skills along the way, come join us Wednesday night at Halligan 102!

Come to this exciting (first ever!) joint workshop by Tufts Enigma and Tufts Observer on infographics + design in the journalism process! Featuring Chelsea Newman from the Observer and Angie Sijun Lou and Soubhik Barari from Enigma.
We will discuss design + visual / data journalism in a hands-on, ‘show-not-tell’ way, and give you a glimpse at how we create our visuals, in addition talk about / recommend some of the easy-to-use tools that you can pick up for your own projects.
